1972 NL Championship Series

October 7, 1972

 The Cincinnati Reds came to Pittsburgh for game 1 of the 1972 NLCS and handily beat the Pirates 9-2. With the score tied 1-1, the Reds scored 4 runs in the 5th and added 4 more in the 6th, effectively putting the game out of reach for the home team.  Johnny Bench hit a two out 3 run homer in the 5th and Tony Perez followed that with a solo blast. Perez went 4 for 5 on the day with 3 RBI. Jack Billingham pitched 8 innings for the win. Pittsburgh's Roberto Clemente hit 2 homeruns in a losing effort.

Tony Perez had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the Cincinnati Reds topped the Pittsburgh
Pirates by a score of 9 to 3 at Three Rivers Stadium.
 
Perez had a good day at the plate.  He stroked a single in the 4th inning,
doubled bringing home two baserunners in the 5th inning, delivered a solo
blast in the 6th inning and stroked a one-base hit in the 9th inning.
Cincinnati out-hit Pittsburgh for the game, 14 hits to 7.  
 
Jack Billingham(1-0) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 8 innings. Steve
Blass(0-1) was tagged with the loss.  He was knocked around, surrendering 5
runs in 4 and 2/3 innings.
