1972 AL Championship Series

October 7, 1972

The Oakland A's had a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 8th inning at Yankee Stadium before the New York batters finally got to starter Catfish Hunter in Game 1 of the 1972 ALCS. With 2 out and a runner on 1st, Thurman Munson doubled to left-centerfield scoring pinch runner Jerry Kenney from 1st base on a close play at the plate. Roy White then followed with a single to center, scoring Munson on another close play at the plate and giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead. Sparky Lyle came on in relief for the 9th inning and closed out the game, giving New York a 1-0 lead in the best of 5 series. Ken Holtzman will be going for the A's tomorrow and Mel Stottelmyre will get the start for the Yankees.

One run was the difference at Yankee Stadium as the New York Yankees defeated
the Oakland A's 2 to 1.

Rob Gardner(1-0) contributed a very nice performance in relief. He was stingy
on the mound, allowing just 2 hits and no walks in 2 innings. Oakland had a
chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Sparky Lyle got the save, his 1st. Catfish Hunter(0-1) was tagged with the
loss. He pitched 7 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 5 hits and 1 walk.

'We didn't get the key hits when we needed them' Dick Williams said. 'We did
what we could, we just didn't pull out the win. What can you say?'
