In front of a packed house at Tiger Stadium Steve Kline effectively shut down the Tigers offense for his 17th win of the season and Bobby Murcer went 3 for 5, scoring 2 runs and driving in another. Sparky Lyle came on in relief in the 8th inning and notched his 41st save of the season. The loss puts Detroit 6 games behind the AL East leading New York club with 7 games left to play.
