1972 AL Game of Note: NY@Det

September 27,1972

 In the first of two big games for the Detroit Tigers, the New York Yankees defeated the hometown team 4-1. In front of a packed house at Tiger Stadium Steve Kline effectively shut down the Tigers offense for his 17th win of the season and Bobby Murcer went 3 for 5, scoring 2 runs and driving in another. Sparky Lyle came on in relief in the 8th inning and notched his 41st save of the season. The loss puts Detroit 6 games behind the AL East leading New York club with 7 games left to play.

At Tiger Stadium the strong New York Yankees outscored the Detroit Tigers 4 to
1.
 
New York scored 2 runs in the 3rd inning when they had 3 base hits.  That
early scoring held up.  New York out-hit Detroit for the game, 11 hits to 8.
 
Steve Kline(17-8) got the win allowing 1 run in 7 innings. Sparky Lyle was
credited with his 41st save.  Joe Coleman(18-12) was given the loss.  He
allowed 8 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings.
