One run was the difference at Yankee Stadium as the New York Yankees defeated
the Oakland A's 2 to 1.

Rob Gardner(1-0) contributed a very nice performance in relief. He was stingy
on the mound, allowing just 2 hits and no walks in 2 innings. Oakland had a
chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Sparky Lyle got the save, his 1st. Catfish Hunter(0-1) was tagged with the
loss. He pitched 7 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 5 hits and 1 walk.

'We didn't get the key hits when we needed them' Dick Williams said. 'We did
what we could, we just didn't pull out the win. What can you say?'

1972 AL Final Standings

October 5, 1972

The New York Yankees won the AL East Pennant and the Oakland A's are the AL West Champions. My Detroit Tigers had a strong finish but weren't able to catch the Yankees. Who knows what would have happened had MLB played its normal 162 games in this strike shortened season???

1972 NL Final League Standings

October 5, 1972

The NL East Champion Pittsburgh Pirates were the only team in MLB this 1972 season to win 100 games. The Pirates featured the top pitching staff in the NL and were 2nd in offense to the NL West Champion Cincinnati Reds. The Reds struggled to keep the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers at bay, but put together a regular season ending 7 game winning streak to clinch the pennant.

1972 NL Standings

September 30, 1972

The Pittsburgh Pirates are the first team to clinch the pennant in this 1972 MLB season. The Pirates are the NL East Champions. They get the official SOM *WON* designation although they really clinched the pennant earlier in the week. The "MAGIC#" listed here is based on a 162 game season. Because of the strike shortened season, most of the teams will only play 155 games, thus the MAGIC# disparity. The Cincinnati Reds Magic # in the NL West is actually 1, not 8 as displayed in the Standings.

1972 AL Game of Note: NY@Det

September 27,1972

In the first of two big games for the Detroit Tigers, the New York Yankees defeated the hometown team 4-1. In front of a packed house at Tiger Stadium Steve Kline effectively shut down the Tigers offense for his 17th win of the season and Bobby Murcer went 3 for 5, scoring 2 runs and driving in another. Sparky Lyle came on in relief in the 8th inning and notched his 41st save of the season. The loss puts Detroit 6 games behind the AL East leading New York club with 7 games left to play.

1972 AL Standings

September 26, 1972

The Detroit Tigers have pulled within 5 games of the AL East leading New York Yankees. The Tigers have gone 9-1 over the last 10 games. But there are only 8 games left in the season for Detroit, 7 for New York. A big 2 game series in Detroit against New York is on tap next on the schedule. The Tigers have to take both games to have any chance of catching the Yankees. In the AL West, the Oakland A's magic # for clinching the pennant is down to 9 games.
