1972 AL Standings and League Leaders

July 24, 1972

League Leaders in the AL at the All Star break. Oakland's Reggie Jackson is putting up some incredible power numbers so far this season. New York's Bobby Murcer has been coming on strong himself. These two players have helped lift their teams into the top spots in their respective Divisions. But the player having the most outstanding season to date has got to be pitcher Gaylord Perry of the Cleveland Indians. Perry has won 19 games this year and is 3rd in the AL in ERA and K's. He's on a pace to win 35 games and has, almost single handily, kept the Indians in the pennant race. As for my Detroit Tigers, Norm Cash has been the top hitter on the club. He's 3rd in the AL in Homeruns and 4th in RBI. Pitchers Mickey Lolich and Joe Coleman are in the top 5 in Wins in the AL with Lolich also 2nd in the league in K's.

1972 NL Standings at the All Star Break

July 24, 1972

The standings in the NL at the All Star break finds the Pittsburgh Pirates leading the NL East and the Cincinnati Reds in 1st place in the West. The Pirates have been playing consistent, solid baseball, allowing them to keep their lead over a very good New York Met team and a very good Chicago Cub team. The Cincinnati Reds on the other hand have stumbled in July, allowing the Los Angeles Dodgers as well as the Houston Astros and San Francisco Giants to creep back into contention.

1972 NL Standings and League Leaders

July 24, 1972

News Recap and League Leaders in the NL at the All Star break. Chicago Cub Billy Williams continues to impress with his hitting this season. His 33 homeruns at the break are the most in MLB and he's on a pace to hit 59. Still in the running for a Triple Crown season, he's being pushed by Cincinnati's Johnny Bench in RBI and is currently 2nd in the NL for top BA. William's teammate Ferguson Jenkins leads the NL in Wins with 14, but it's Philadelphia's Steve Carlton who has been putting up the most impressive pitching stats while playing for a sub .500 team.
