1972 AL Game of Note

Nolan Ryan | Society for American Baseball ResearchApril 28, 1972

California Angel starter Nolan Ryan (1-2) pitched a beauty of a game tonight, a one-hit 1-0 shutout victory over the Baltimore Orioles. For Ryan it was his 1st win of the season and his 1st as an Angel. Nolan was obtained over the winter from the New York Mets in exchange for long time fan favorite Jim Fregosi. He struck out 11 in the game while walking 4. Jim Palmer (0-2) was the hard luck loser for the slumping Orioles, allowing only 1 run in the game.

Nolan Ryan pitched a 1 hit shutout and shortstop Leo Cardenas had 2 base hits
as the California Angels defeated the ice-cold Baltimore Orioles by the score
of 1 to 0 at Memorial Stadium.

Ryan(1-2) simply dominated Baltimore. He allowed just 1 hit and 4 walks in 9
innings. Ryan whiffed an impressive total of 11 Baltimore batters improving
his ERA from 4.66 to 2.41. California finished with 7 hits in the victory.

Jim Palmer(0-2) was the loser. He allowed just 5 hits and no walks in 8
innings. Ryan, when asked about his 11 strikeout performance noted, 'The
important thing is that we won, if I get 20 and we lose, what good does it do
our team? But, on the other hand, since we won it feels great!'
