1972 AL Standings

May 15, 1972

The Cleveland Indians have gotten off to the best start in MLB in this 1972 season. The Indians rank 1st in pitching in the AL and 2nd in scoring. Cleveland is still the only team in the AL East with a record above .500. My Detroit Tigers continue to hover around the .500 mark. Struggling to score runs, Detroit had a breakout 15-5 victory in their last game and hope it becomes a trend. Last years AL Champion Baltimore Orioles are still in last place in the East but have put together some good wins since their 1-12 start to the season. In the West, a good pennant race is shaping up between Minnesota, Oakland, and Chicago. The California Angels are also in the mix being only 3 GB the leaders.

1972 NL Standings

May 15, 1972

It's the middle of May, 1 month into the 1972 NL season, and very tight pennant races are happening in both divisions. The Chicago Cubs hold the top position in the NL East but only 4.5 games separate them from all the teams in the Division. Every team has held 1st place in the East at one point in the season so far. In the NL West, Cincinnati has a slim .5 game lead over 2nd place San Francisco and 1 game over 3rd place Los Angeles.

1956 NL News Recap and League Leaders

May 15, 1972

It's half way through the month of May and Chicago's Billy Williams continues his feverish attack on NL pitching. Williams leads the league with a .442 BA and has hit 17 HR in 24 games. Only San Francisco's Bobby Bonds' impressive 32 RBI has kept Williams from leading in all 3 Triple Crown categories. Their teammates, Ferguson Jenkins and Juan Marichal top all pitchers with 6 wins. St. Louis's Lou Brock and Houston's Joe Morgan continue to steal bases at a historic pace.

Nolan Ryan threw a 1 hit shutout as the California Angels beat the Boston Red
Sox by a score of 5 to 0.

Ryan(3-2) was tremendous on the mound for California. He allowed only 1 hit
and 3 walks in 9 innings. Ryan struckout 11 Boston batters improving his ERA
from 2.03 to 1.51. California managed 15 hits in their victory.

Marty Pattin(2-2) was the loser. He was knocked around by California,
allowing 11 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. Del Rice was very impressed with
his pitcher, Ryan, 'He had unusually good pitch placement tonight. It was
almost unfair - but a beautiful game to watch from where I sat'

1972 AL Standings

May 1, 1972

The 1st month of the 1972 season is in the books and there are a few surprises so far. The biggest surprise has been the awful start the Baltimore Orioles have had. Baltimore, last years AL Champion, is 1-12. Their hitting has been anemic. Scoring only 24 runs through the first 13 games, the Orioles are hitting a MLB worst .176 as a team. The Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox are two of the other surprises. Both clubs have gotten off to great starts and lead their respective divisions. The Indians have gotten very good pitching and lead MLB in least runs allowed. The fact that there are 5 teams in the AL West above .500 and only 1 in the AL East is also surprising. The AL East was considered the stronger of the 2 divisions but that hasn't been the case so far. My Detroit Tigers are 1 game under .500, 2 games worse than actual. It will be a challenge to get the Tigers to repeat as pennant winners. They are in the bottom half of the AL in hitting and at the middle of the pack in pitching.

1972 AL News Recap and League Leaders

May 1, 1972

New York Yankee Bobby Murcer and Chicago White Sox pitcher Wilbur Wood stand out as top performers so far in the 1972 AL season. Murcer is leading the AL in BA and is in the top 4 in HR and RBI. Wilbur Wood has started and completed 5 games. At one point Wood had a scoreless inning streak of 34 before a run was scored against him. For my Tigers, Norm Cash is off to a good start. He leads the AL with 14 RBI and is 3rd in hitting with a .400 BA. The Minnesota Twins Harmon Killebrew, Oakland's Reggie Jackson, and Cleveland's Gaylord Perry should also be noted for their good starts on the season.

1972 NL Standings

May 1, 1972

With the month of April behind them, last years World Series Champion Pittsburgh Pirates find themselves tied on top of the NL East with the Montreal Expos. While it's very early in the season the other 4 teams in the division are right behind them, with the last place Cardinals only 2 games back. In the NL West, the Cincinnati Reds have gotten off to the best start of any team. Los Angeles and San Francisco are close behind. Two teams have gotten off to much worse starts than expected: the Houston Astros (4-10) and Atlanta Braves (3-12) are both have pitching problems.

Don Sutton(3-1) thrilled the fans at Dodger Stadium as he crafted a no-hit
masterpiece against the New York Mets. The Los Angeles Dodgers won by a
final score of 7 to 0.

Sutton provided a brilliant, unforgettable performance for the hometown crowd
at Dodger Stadium day. He surrendered no walks and could have tossed a
perfect game if it were not for the fielding error. What a day for the fans.
They were on the edge of their seats from the 7th inning on. With every
out, the electricity in the air mounted. Los Angeles rapped out 12 hits for
the afternoon.

Buzz Capra(0-1) was the loser. He surrended 3 homeruns in his 4 and 1/3
innings. 'I gave it everything I had. It's probably the greatest day of my
life,' Sutton said. 'I was out there focusing on my catcher's glove, that's
all. I just concentrated on pitching my game.'
