The following are the game stories from Opening Day in the NL. There were a number of outstanding performances by pitchers on this day. Don Sutton of the Los Angeles Dodgers threw a 3-hit 1-0 shutout win over the powerful Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis's Bob Gibson got a 3-hit 3-0 shutout victory over the Montreal Expos, and Juan Marichal of the San Francisco Giants got a 6-0 3-hit shutout win over the Houston Astros.

Billy Williams jacked one out of the ballyard and had 2 RBI and Fergie Jenkins
took a no-hitter into the 6th inning as the Chicago Cubs defeated the
Philadelphia Phillies 5 to 2 at Wrigley Field.
Jenkins(1-0) pitched a solid game. He didn't give up much, just 5 hits and 1
walk in 9 innings and allowed 2 gopher balls. The right-handed Jenkins lost
a no-hitter when Mike Anderson homered with nobody out in the 6th inning.
Chicago had a total of 11 hits for the game.
Steve Carlton(0-1) was tagged with the loss. He gave up 3 runs and 6 hits in
5 innings.
LOS ANGELES AT CINCINNATI

Center fielder Willie Davis hit 2 doubles and Don Sutton allowed 3 hits while
blanking Cincinnati as the Los Angeles Dodgers bested the Cincinnati Reds 1
to 0 at Riverfront Stadium.
Sutton(1-0) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the
Cincinnati batters. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 3 hits and 5
walks in 9 innings. Sutton chalked up 10 strikeouts. Los Angeles had a
total of 8 hits for the game.
Jack Billingham(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 1 run and 8 hits
in 8 innings. Sparky Anderson was impressed with Sutton and his 10
strikeouts. 'It's tough to generate runs if you can't make contact with the
ball.'

In a game at Shea Stadium the Pittsburgh Pirates got by the New York Mets by
the score of 4 to 1.
Dock Ellis(1-0) gave Pittsburgh a solid outing. He allowed 4 hits and no
walks in 6 innings. The game was a scoreless duel until the 6th inning.
Ramon Hernandez earned his 1st save. Tom Seaver(0-1) was the loser. He gave
up 5 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.

Bob Gibson threw a 3 hit shutout and Joe Torre went yard at Busch Stadium
where the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Montreal Expos 3 to 0.
Gibson(1-0) dominated Montreal hitters. He allowed just 3 hits and 3 walks in
9 innings. St. Louis banged out 7 hits on the afternoon.
Bill Stoneman(0-1) was charged with the loss. 'He came out with good stuff,'
Red Schoendienst said about Gibson. 'He threw the ball good from the first
pitch on.'
SAN FRANCISCO AT HOUSTON

Juan Marichal was on top of his game, blanking Houston on just 3 hits and left
fielder Ken Henderson left the yard and had 2 RBI at Houston The Astrodome as
the San Francisco Giants beat the Houston Astros by the count of 6 to
0.
Marichal(1-0) was simply too much for the Houston batters. He gave up just 3
hits and 4 walks in 9 innings. San Francisco totaled 12 hits on the night.
Don Wilson(0-1) was given the loss. He allowed 3 runs and 8 hits in 6
innings.
ATLANTA AT SAN DIEGO

Leron Lee hit 2 doubles and Clay Kirby was able to finish what he started and
was credited with a complete game as the San Diego Padres defeated the
Atlanta Braves 3 to 1 at San Diego Stadium.
Kirby(1-0) pitched a solid game. He surrendered only 6 hits and 5 walks in 9
innings. San Diego had a total of 7 hits for the game.
Phil Niekro(0-1) was hit with the loss. He pitched 8 innings allowing 7 hits
and 1 walk.
