1972 was a strike shortened season in MLB. The season started late, on April 15th, and the original schedule was followed from that date with no make up games. As a result, some teams played a different amount of total games by season's end. In 1972 there were 2 Divisions in each League and each Division had 6 teams. There was the NL East, NL West, AL East, and AL West. While the unbalanced schedule didn't effect 3 of the Divisions, it did have an impact on 1, the AL East. The Detroit Tigers ended up winning that Division by 1/2 game over the 2nd place Boston Red Sox. Detroit played 1 game more than Boston and that resulted in the 1/2 game edge.
1972 is also the first season for the Texas Rangers. The club was the Washington Senators and played in Washington D.C. and Arlington prior to the move. 1972 is also the last year that pitchers were required to bat in the AL. The DH was adopted for the 1973 season in the AL.
I'll be managing Detroit during this asplayed replay and will try to repeat their AL East pennant winning season. Hopefully by more than 1/2 game.
