1972 AL Game: NY at Oak.

July 4, 1972

The Oakland A's had a come-from-behind, extra inning victory over the New York Yankees tonight, and with the win moved past the Minnesota Twins for 1st place in the AL West. The A's trailed 7-1  before getting 4 runs in the 7th and 2 in the 9th to tie it up, sending the game into extra innings. 3 straight base hits to start the bottom of the 10th inning resulted in a 8-7 Oakland win. The A's moved past the Twins, who have held the top spot in the AL West since May 3rd.

Mike Epstein slammed a homerun as the Oakland A's defeated the New York
Yankees in 10 innings by the score of 8 to 7 at Oakland Co Stadium.
 
The game was deadlocked at 7 after nine full innings.  Oakland won the hard
fought contest in the 10th inning.  Bill Voss slapped a one-base hit.  Sal
Bando stepped up to the plate and he lined a base-hit.  Dave Duncan then
stroked a base-hit resulting in an exciting win for Oakland and a wild
post-game celebration by the home town fans.  Oakland managed 9 hits in their
victory.  
 
Joe Horlen(1-0) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Sparky
Lyle(2-3) ended up with the loss in relief.  He got hit hard, allowing 5 hits
and 2 walks in 2 innings.  
 
With this win, Oakland has a division leading 42-28 record.  They have been
7-3 lately.  With the loss New York now has a record of 40-26.
