1972 AL Game/Player of Note

Woodie Fryman and the 1972 Detroit TigersAugust 13, 1972

Detroit Tiger Woodie Fryman came close to perfection today while getting his 1st Win for his new team. Fryman pitched a 1-hit shutout while defeating the Cleveland Indians 7-0. Fryman had a perfect game going until Jerry Moses doubled with 2 out in the top of the 8th inning. Detroit got to MLB's best pitcher this year, Gaylord Perry, in the 1st inning when Norm Cash connected for a 3-run bomb. That was all the Tigers would need as Fryman settled in and pitched a gem.

Woodie Fryman took a no-hitter into the 8th inning and Aurelio Rodriguez went
deep and scored 3 times as the Detroit Tigers bested the Cleveland Indians 7
to 0 at Tiger Stadium.

Fryman(1-0) was on top of his game. He didn't allow much, just 1 hit and no
walks in 9 innings dropping his ERA from 3.38 to 1.59. The left-handed
Fryman lost his chance for a no-hitter when Jerry Moses doubled with two outs
in the 8th inning. Detroit finished with 9 hits in the victory.

The losing pitcher was Gaylord Perry(21-7). Billy Martin was very impressed
with his pitcher, Fryman, 'He had unusually good pitch placement this
afternoon. It was almost unfair - but a beautiful game to watch from where I
sat'
