1972 AL Standings

September 1, 1972

We're into the final full month of the 1972 AL season. The New York Yankees have been the top team in MLB. They hold an 11 game lead over the 2nd place Detroit Tigers. The Yankees had an incredible 26-7 record in August. Barring a complete collapse, it looks as though New York will take the AL East.
The AL West 1st place Oakland A's are getting some fierce competition from the Chicago White Sox. The Sox boast the best pitching in the AL and went 18-9 in August.

1972 NL Standings

September 1, 1972

The 1972 NL season has reached the final full month of the regular season. The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to be the class of the NL East. The Pirates pitching has been the best in the league and only Cincinnati has had a more productive offense. Over in the NL West, the Reds have struggled mightily over the last 2 months, barely breaking even in August after a dreadful July. This has allowed the Los Angeles Dodgers to stay within 1.5 games from Cincinnati. At one point in August the Dodgers held 1st place for 5 days. The San Francisco Giants and Houston Astros are still very much in the hunt.

1972 NL News Recap with League Leaders

September 1, 1972

It's the 1st of September and Chicago's Billy Williams has a hold on the Triple Crown. Williams finally overtook Houston's Ceasar Cedeno as the top hitter (BA) in the NL. Cincinnati's Johnny Bench has been on a tear as of late and has closed the gap on Williams in the RBI category.

1972 AL Games of Note

August 16, 1972

On a day that the red-hot Chicago White Sox won their 10th game in a row, the New York Yankees winning streak was snapped at 15. Chicago defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 as Wilbur Wood won his 20th game of the season. In New York, Kansas City got 4 runs in the 1st inning and that was all the scoring the Royals would need in stopping the Yankee's 15 game winning streak. Roger Nelson pitched a complete game shutout for Kansas City, earning his 6th win of the season.

1972 AL Standings

August 15, 1972

The red-hot New York Yankees have reeled off 15 straight wins and opened a double digit lead over 2nd place Detroit in the AL East. The Yankees boast the top hitting team in the AL and are near the top in pitching. My Detroit Tigers have played well but continue to fall further and further behind. The Oakland A's have had a few problems lately, and that has allowed the streaking Chicago White Sox to pull closer in the AL West. The Minnesota Twins continue to keep both clubs within their sights.

1972 AL News Recap and League Leaders

August 15, 1972

Standings and League Leaders in the AL at the middle of August. New York Yankee Bobby Murcer has led the way for his team's hold on 1st place in the AL East. The same can be said for Oakland's Reggie Jackson and the A's hold on 1st in the AL West. Cleveland's Gaylord Perry has continued to be the top pitcher in the AL, but Detroit's Mickey Lolich and Oakland's Catfish Hunter have narrowed the gap.

1972 NL Standings

August 15, 1972

The dog days of summer are upon the 1972 MLB season. The Pittsburgh Pirates have increased their lead over the 2nd place New York Mets in the NL East by going 12-2 so far in August. They are the top hitting team and top pitching team in the NL. The Cincinnati Reds are in 1st place in the NL West, but their stumbling ways over the last month has allowed the LA Dodgers, San Francisco Giants and Houston Astros to pull within striking distance.

1972 AL Game/Player of Note

Woodie Fryman and the 1972 Detroit TigersAugust 13, 1972

Detroit Tiger Woodie Fryman came close to perfection today while getting his 1st Win for his new team. Fryman pitched a 1-hit shutout while defeating the Cleveland Indians 7-0. Fryman had a perfect game going until Jerry Moses doubled with 2 out in the top of the 8th inning. Detroit got to MLB's best pitcher this year, Gaylord Perry, in the 1st inning when Norm Cash connected for a 3-run bomb. That was all the Tigers would need as Fryman settled in and pitched a gem.
