1972 Detroit Tiger News

August 10, 1972

It was a rough weekend for the AL East 2nd place Detroit Tigers. Detroit headed into New York for a 4 game series against the 1st place Yankees, hoping to gain some ground. Instead, the Tigers were swept by the Yankees and now find themselves 8 games behind the front runners. While all 4 games were close contests, the Tiger's weak hitting proved to be their undoing. Over in the AL West, the Oakland A's have a comfortable 6 game lead over the Minnesota Twins.

Mickey Lolich took a no-hitter into the 6th inning at Cleveland Stadium as the
Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians by the count of 3 to
0.

Lolich(16-3) escaped virtually unscathed against the Cleveland hitters. He
didn't allow much, just 1 hit and 1 walk in 9 innings. The left-handed
Lolich lost his no-hit bid when Dick Tidrow singled with one out in the 6th
inning. The Cleveland batters didn't put up a fight in the bottom of the
9th.

Tidrow(7-8) took the loss. Ken Aspromonte lamented, 'Lolich was really
aggressive tonight. He kept coming after our hitters. Heck, why not. he
kept sitting our guys down one after another - like so many bowling pins!'

1972 NL Standings

August 1, 1972

The 1972 MLB season has reached the month of August. Pittsburgh continues to lead the NL East and Cincinnati leads the West. The Pirates maintained their lead in the division by going 18-12 in July. The Reds conversely had a horrible month of July, going 9-17. But the Houston Astros and San Francisco Giants were the only teams able to gain any real ground on the division leaders. The 2nd place Los Angeles Dodgers had a sub-.500 month themselves, but were able to gain a little on the Reds.

1972 AL Standings at the All Star Break

July 24, 1972

The 1972 All Star Game is being played later than usual because of the delayed start of the season. The New York Yankees have continued their winnings ways and lead the AL East by 2.5 games over 2nd place Detroit. The Cleveland Indians are still in the thick of things. In the West, the Oakland A's have risen to the top, while Minnesota has fallen significantly in July but still hold 2nd place. Oakland and New York are the top 2 scoring teams in the AL. My Detroit Tigers have had the best record so far (16-8) in July, keeping them hot on the heels of the Yankees.

1972 AL Standings and League Leaders

July 24, 1972

League Leaders in the AL at the All Star break. Oakland's Reggie Jackson is putting up some incredible power numbers so far this season. New York's Bobby Murcer has been coming on strong himself. These two players have helped lift their teams into the top spots in their respective Divisions. But the player having the most outstanding season to date has got to be pitcher Gaylord Perry of the Cleveland Indians. Perry has won 19 games this year and is 3rd in the AL in ERA and K's. He's on a pace to win 35 games and has, almost single handily, kept the Indians in the pennant race. As for my Detroit Tigers, Norm Cash has been the top hitter on the club. He's 3rd in the AL in Homeruns and 4th in RBI. Pitchers Mickey Lolich and Joe Coleman are in the top 5 in Wins in the AL with Lolich also 2nd in the league in K's.
