Detroit's Mickey Lolich became the 3rd pitcher in the AL to win 20 games this season by defeating the Oakland A's 7-2. Al Kaline hit a Grand Slam Homerun in the 5th inning breaking a 2-2 tie. Lolich went the distance for the 18th time this year, improving his record to 20-5.

The Yankees had an incredible 26-7 record in August. Barring a complete collapse, it looks as though New York will take the AL East.
The AL West 1st place Oakland A's are getting some fierce competition from the Chicago White Sox. The Sox boast the best pitching in the AL and went 18-9 in August.

The 1972 NL season has reached the final full month of the regular season. The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to be the class of the NL East. The Pirates pitching has been the best in the league and only Cincinnati has had a more productive offense. Over in the NL West, the Reds have struggled mightily over the last 2 months, barely breaking even in August after a dreadful July. The 1972 NL season has reached the final full month of the regular season. The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to be the class of the NL East. The Pirates pitching has been the best in the league and only Cincinnati has had a more productive offense. Over in the NL West, the Reds have struggled mightily over the last 2 months, barely breaking even in August after a dreadful July.
