1972 NL Game of Note: Atl. at Cin.

May 24, 1972

In the biggest lopsided score I can ever remember having, the Cincinnati Reds absolutely destroyed the Atlanta Braves 21-0. Reds starter Wayne Simpson threw a 2-hit shutout while Johnny Bench led the scoring attack with 4 RS and 4 RBI.

Wayne Simpson whitewashed Atlanta on 2 hits and Johnny Bench homered and had 4
RBI at Riverfront Stadium as the Cincinnati Reds embarrassed the Atlanta
Braves by the lopsided score of 21 to 0.

Bench made sure the Cincinnati fans enjoyed themselves. He clubbed a two-run
home run in the 2nd inning, ripped a one-base hit in the 6th inning and
stroked a base-hit bringing in a run in the 7th inning. Cincinnati kept the
scorekeepers busy in the 2nd inning when they had 6 runs on 3 hits and the
6th inning which saw them score 9 runs on 8 hits. Cincinnati had 21 hits for
the afternoon.

Simpson(3-0) was credited with the shutout, his first of the year. Tom
Kelley(0-4) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings and
surrendered 4 hits and 4 walks.
