October 22, 1972

The Pittsburgh Pirates are the 1972 World Series Champions!  Game 7 was another slugfest and the Pittsburgh Pirates came from behind to defeat the Oakland A's 9-8. The Pirates exploded for 5 runs in the 2nd inning, forcing Oakland to use 4 pitchers to put out the fire. Then the A's came back with 2 runs in the 3rd and 4 in the 4th, taking a 6-5 lead in the game. Both clubs scored a run in the 5th and Oakland got another in the 8th, giving them an 8-6 lead. But Pittsburgh struck back in the bottom of the 8th off relief ace Rollie Fingers. With 2 men on base, Vic Davalillo hit a homerun giving the Pirates a 9-8 lead. Dave Giusti came on in the 9th and retired the A's in order, preserving the win and giving Pittsburgh the 1972 MLB Championship.

October 21, 1972

In what many thought would be a low scoring Game 6 turned out to be the exact opposite. Catfish Hunter started for Oakland and Bob Moose got the start for Pittsburgh. The Pirates scored a run in the 3rd inning and with the bases loaded with 2 out in the bottom of the 4th, manager Bill Virdon saw an opportunity to cash in on some hard to get runs. He pinch-hit for Moose with Bob Robertson who walked, forcing in the 2nd run of the game for Pittsburgh. Hunter got the final out of the inning, but he was pinch-hit for in the top of the 5th when Oakland had 2 men in scoring position with 2 out. The A's weren't able to cash in on their opportunity, the bullpens took over from that point, and so did the bats for both clubs. When it was over, Pittsburgh had won the game 9-6. The Pirates had 13 hits in the game and the A's had 14. So tomorrow there will be a 7th Game of the World Series. Dock Ellis is scheduled to start for the hometown Pirates. Blue Moon Odom will start for Oakland.

October 18, 1972

The Pittsburgh Pirates scored a run in the 2nd inning on a Richie Hebner homerun, but the Oakland A's scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd and that would be all they'd need, winning game 4 of the 1972 World Series 6-2.  Vida Blue was effective for the A's through 6th innings and picked up the win. 1972 World Series Game 3

October 17, 1971

Game 3 of the 1972 World Series was a marathon. The Pittsburgh Pirates finally prevailed in the 17th inning, winning the game 1-0. It was a pitchers battle throughout the game. Both teams had a number of chances to score, but whoever was on the mound was always able to get out of the jam. Starters Catfish Hunter and Doc Ellis both lasted into the 9th inning. In the 17th inning, Richie Hebner led off with a base hit. He advanced to 2nd on a Joel Horlen wild pitch. After an out, pinch-hitter Rennie Stennett singled, scoring Hebner. Bob Johnson pitched 2 scoreless innings getting the Win. Bob Miller came on to pitch in the bottom of the 17th and was able to close it out for the Pirates. The Series is now 2-1 in favor of Oakland.

Third baseman Richie Hebner had 3 base hits at Oakland Co Stadium as the
Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Oakland A's in 17 innings by the count of 1 to
0.

The game was a scoreless tie after nine. Pittsburgh won the hard fought
contest in the 17th inning. Hebner stroked a one-base hit. Joe Horlen then
uncorked a wild pitch. After an out was recorded, Rennie Stennett came to
bat and lined a base-hit. Stennett took second on the throw. After another
out, Horlen stepped in and he fired a sharp breaking ball that appeared to
cross-up the catcher. In any event, it got by him and was ruled a passed
ball but Stennett ended up stranded at 3rd. Both teams finished the game with
11 hits.
The victory was credited to Bob Johnson(1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no
runs. Bob Miller was credited with his 1st save. Horlen(0-1) ended up with
the loss in relief.

1972 World Series Game 2

October 15, 1972

The Oakland A's won Game 2 in 12 innings by the score of 6-3 over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Joe Rudi was the hero for the A's, driving in the winning run with a 2-out base hit. Reggie Jackson followed with a 2-run single. Rollie Fingers set the Pirates down in order in the bottom of the 12th and got the Win for Oakland. The Pirates could not get anything going against the A's pitching. They did get a 3-run homer from Richie Hebner in the 4th inning for a 3-1 lead, but only had 3 hits through the 1st 9 innings of the game. Oakland battled back and tied the game at 3 in the 8th inning before finally winning it in the 12th. The A's now hold a commanding 2-0 Series lead with the next 3 games scheduled to be played in Oakland.

1972 World Series Game 1

I need to preface the start of my 1972 World Series by pointing out that Reggie Jackson WILL be playing. In real life, Jackson was injured in Game 5 of the ALCS and missed the World Series. While my 1972 regular season was AsPlayed, the League Championships and World Series are not AsPlayed for obvious reasons: the team matchups are not the same. Jackson did not get injured in my ALCS. I still thought about excluding him, but finally decided to let him play. If he does get an injury in the WS, he will miss the rest of the Series.

October 14, 1972

The Oakland A's defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-3 in Game 1 of the 1972 World Series in Pittsburgh. The A's jumped into the lead in the 2nd inning on a 2-run homer from Mike Epstein. In the 3rd inning, Oakland chased Pirates starter Steve Blass and by the time the inning ended the A's had a 6-1 lead. Pittsburgh out hit Oakland 13-12 and the A's Ken Holtzman had a mediocre start, but it wasn't enough to stop Oakland from taking Game 1.

1972 AL Championship Series Game 4

October 11, 1972

The Oakland A's are the 1972 AL Champions! Oakland defeated the New York Yankees 1-0 today in a very well pitched game by both clubs. The A's scored the only run of the game, an unearned run, in the 3rd inning after Yankee catcher Thurman Munson made two throwing errors. New York made it exciting in the 9th inning when pinch hitter John Ellis hit a flyball to the wall in leftfield with a man on 1st. Joe Rudi was able to make the catch, ending the game. A's starter Catfish Hunter went the distance, pitching a 3-hit shutout and winning the AL pennant for Oakland 3 games to 1.
